Meet the ladies of the Jean Hooten Home

Cassie

Cassie

In her 30’s, Cassie has developmental disabilities due to Down Syndrome. Prior to becoming a resident of the Jean Hooten Home, Cassie lived with her mom and a pet dog named Sammy. Cassie comes from a very close family, with 2 brothers and 1 sister. Cassie loves talking about her nieces Sophia and Zoe and her nephew Peter. Her grandma (Yiayia) and grandpa (Papou) are special people in her life, as well.

Cassie has attended STARS Disability Ministries for years. She enjoys STARS Sunday school, Hangin’ With a STAR (a social time with Wheaton College students) Friday Night Fun and STARS retreats. Cassie especially enjoys the music ministries of STARS; Praise in Action and STARS Choir as her mom serves as a very capable helper. Karaoke singing is a favorite of Cassie’s!

Cassie enjoys being physically active and participates in bowling, swimming, dancing and yoga. She loves watching sports on TV. Her favorite teams are the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Blackhawks. Cassie is also a huge Star Wars fan! She’ll never refuse the opportunity to sit down and read her favorite Star Wars book!

Cassie keeps busy during the week through her participation in Rec n Roll activities through Western DuPage Special Recreation Association. She also volunteers as a teacher’s aide in an elementary school. Cassie is proving to be a fabulous housemate and enjoys doing her chores and cooking, all with a smile on her face!

Diane

Diane

In her early 60’s, Diane has special needs due to her intellectual challenges. Prior to becoming part of the Jean Hooten Home, Diane lived with her wonderful mom. As a Hooten Home resident, Diane is learning many new things and moving closer to independence. Diane has been active in STARS Disability Ministry for over 3 decades! She attends STARS Sunday school, Praise in Action and Friday Night Fun, enjoying many special events with STARS friends.

Diane has a very warm and friendly personality resulting in many friendships made at STARS. She remembers people she has met through the years, even remembering details about their lives. Diane is the definition of a “people-person”!

Diane has many interests. She enjoys music (especially Elvis!) praise songs and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Diane loves watching old sitcoms, going to zoos and to Blackberry Farm. Diane absolutely loves any kind of shopping whether for groceries, clothes, purses or shoes!

Her creativity is demonstrated in her crayon drawings, which she likes to give as gifts to special people. Diane also has a knack for doing jig saw puzzles, especially puzzles of cute animals.

Along with her mom Diane enjoys serving meals at the Convalescent Center. She is a faithful team member of the Job Partner Program at Twice is Nice Resale Shop. If you’re ever in the shop, ask for Diane. She loves to meet new friends!

Gwynne

Gwynne

In her upper 40’s, Gwynne is one of our animal loving residents! Before moving into the Jean Hooten Home, Gwynne lived with her parents and many pets (a dog, a rabbit, hamsters and a hedgehog!). She is happy to visit her furry friends from time to time. Gwynne also happily works at a pet store twice a week and at a nearby farm once a week helping with care of the horses.

Gwynne grew up as the daughter of book sellers and has carried on the family tradition of being a book lover. Gwynne brought all her favorite books to the Hooten Home and is happy to share them with her housemates.

Gywnne has attended STARS for many years; STARS Sunday school, Praise in Action, STARS Choir and Adult Retreats. She has many gifts and talents, among them is a beautifully sweet singing voice. She is often chosen to do solos in STARS productions, even singing the National Anthem at Run for the STARS! Her love of arts and crafts serves her well at the Hooten Home especially given the beautiful craft area in the lower level of the home. Gwynne is a sports enthusiast and is the catcher in her spring softball league. As if all this isn’t enough to keep her busy, Gwynne is a faithful team member of the Job Partner program at Twice is Nice Resale Store!

Katie

Katie

In her 30’s, Katie has developmental disabilities due to Down Syndrome. Prior to becoming a wonderful member of the Jean Hooten Home, Katie lived with her parents and cat Lucy. Katie loves cats and is very good with them as she and her parents have fostered many cats over the years, even mama cats about to have kittens! Katie enjoys visiting Lucy once in a while. Katie comes from a close family. She is quite proud of her very adorable niece Claire. Katie also has many friends, one of whom plays Yahtzee with her faithfully every week. Sue is known as her “second mom” she is so close to Katie’s family. Watch out if you ever play Yahtzee with Katie. Sue has taught her well! Katie is quite the board game enthusiast, but Yahtzee is her specialty!

Katie came to the Hooten Home with many gifts and talents. She especially enjoys music, both singing and playing the piano. Katie has taken piano lessons for years and is quite the piano player. She loves playing the keyboard at the Hooten Home! Katie also is a crafty person and makes use of our beautiful craft area.

Katie attends STARS Sunday School, Praise in Action, Friday Night Fun, and participates in adult and family retreats. She works at Twice is Nice resale shop, is an important member of the Job Partner Program at Twice is Nice, serves Meals on Wheels along with her parents, and volunteers at the public library! Katie is one busy lady!

Katie has enjoyed learning new chores and being the ‘Chef of the Week’ at the Hooten Home. Katie’s sweet spirit has really shone through as she’s made the Hooten Home her home.

Cheryl

Cheryl

In her 40’s, Cheryl has developmental disabilities due to Down Syndrome. Cheryl has led a rather exciting life as she was born to missionary parents in South America! Cheryl grew up learning many stories and verses from the Bible. Her parent’s desire that Cheryl grow in faith and in caring for others has been realized over the years. Cheryl is a soft spoken faithful follower of Jesus.

Cheryl has been involved in the STARS Disability Ministry for over 3 decades! She enjoys attending Sunday school, Praise in Action, STARS Choir, Friday Night Fun, Gifted to Serve as well as adult and family retreats.

Cheryl is a faithful member of the Job Partner Program at STARS Resale Shop. She keeps busy pursuing her many interests, one of which is swimming! Cheryl swims 3 times per week and benefits from the exercise and therapy for a chronic back problem.

Cheryl is one of the most avid cat-lovers on the planet! She also collects angel figurines along with Hello Kitty and horse collectables. Never doubt that Cheryl is a girly-girl! Her jewelry collection is just beautiful.

Cheryl enjoys crafts, puzzles, listening to WMBI and her Christian CDs. Cheryl’s gift for music is evident in her sweet singing and lovely piano playing.
